A Whole New World

When you look at someone and you see a person you admire, respect, trust, love, and like you’re willing to share a future with them, it feels like you’ve stumbled into another world; much like walking into a wardrobe and finding yourself in Narnia or walking down a rabbit hole and discovering Wonderland.

There is a sense of delight at the awesomeness of knowing them and having them in your life. You marvel at the emotional depth that you suddenly find yourself tapped into. The butterflies, the fireworks, the sudden rush of blood to your face, the tingling in your fingertips... they feel nice. But they’re nothing compared to the ever-expanding universe in your heart that grows bigger every time you unload burdens, whisper sweet nothings, exchange thoughts, hold hands, confess struggles, offer encouragements, shed tears, speak your minds, confide secrets, dream together, or share a hearty laugh.

And you wonder: is it really happening? Are they real? Or are they the imaginary friends of your childhood back to pay you a visit? The mere thought of them humbles you. What have you done to deserve this? It makes you feel like Frodo; thrust into an adventure of a lifetime you didn’t think you were ready for only to realize that you are every time you see them smile. Because you are never truly ready for a journey until you are on it.

It’s not even that they’re perfect because no one is; and it’s not that you’re blind to their imperfections either; but that who they are and are becoming fascinates you. It’s like looking into the Mirror of Galadriel: you see the “things that were, and things that are, and things that yet may be”, and your mind is blown by their unique complexity. You realize with a start that the world you knew was great and beautiful and magical; but for some reason it’s better with them in it.

When you look at someone and you see a whole new world of possibility...

Together.
