Empty

What happens to our memories when they disappear
Do they hide in little known corners
Silent and unnoticed
Present yet unremembered
Or do they bid goodbye like a soul
To spaces we cannot go
Waiting in vain to be reclaimed

What happens to a dream unfulfilled
Can they survive in an ocean of tears
Fight the waves of despair
And not drown in utter disillusionment
Don’t they suffocate behind a veil of unbelief
Gasp in futility for a bit of hope
Yet eventually get choked

What happens to a love forgotten
Does it burst like bubbles
One moment iridiscent
The next merely a sigh
Or does it cease to be
As though it never was
Nor ever is

What happens to a man
No memory of a hope
No dream to hold on to
Nor a love to embrace
A shell of a life
Breathing yet empty
Just waiting for the end
